Walk into maintenance workshops around the world, from Texas to Tokyo, and you will often see the same scene: a mechanic holding a blowtorch against a brand-new bearing to expand it for installation.
It is a “quick fix” that has been passed down for generations. It is also one of the most destructive things you can do to a precision component.
While heat is indeed necessary to expand the inner ring for an interference fit on a shaft, the source of that heat matters. Using an open flame is not maintenance; it is metallurgy abuse. Here is why the global industry is moving exclusively to Induction Heating.
The Science: Why Flame is the Enemy
Bearings are manufactured from high-grade steel that has been heat-treated to achieve a specific hardness structure. This balance is delicate.
1. Uncontrolled Temperature A blowtorch flame burns at temperatures exceeding 1,000°C (1,800°F). Even if you move the torch around, you create localized “hot spots” on the bearing ring. Once bearing steel exceeds approximately 120°C (248°F), the material structure can change permanently. You can accidentally anneal (soften) the steel, meaning the raceway will deform under load as soon as the machine starts.
2. Contamination Open flames are dirty. They leave carbon deposits and soot on the bearing surface. This residue can contaminate the grease and interfere with the precision fit between the shaft and the ring.
3. Uneven Expansion A torch heats the bearing unevenly. One side expands faster than the other, potentially warping the ring out of round. An oval-shaped bearing will never run smoothly.
The Solution: Induction Heating
The global standard for mounting bearings is the Induction Heater.
These devices work like an electrical transformer. The heater creates a magnetic field that induces a high-frequency current within the bearing itself. The bearing generates its own heat from the inside out.
The Advantages:
- Precision Control: You set the thermostat to exactly 110°C (230°F). The heater automatically cuts off when the target is reached. No guessing, no overheating.
- Uniformity: The entire ring heats up at the exact same rate, ensuring perfectly round expansion.
- Cleanliness: There is no smoke, no flame, and no oil baths involved.
- Demagnetization: High-quality heaters (like those from SKF or Timken) automatically demagnetize the bearing at the end of the cycle, preventing metal particles from sticking to the races later.
Invest in the Process, Not Just the Part
Spending $500 on a premium bearing only to ruin it with a $20 torch is bad business.
At Ivor Bearings Inc., we supply more than just the bearings; we supply the tools to install them correctly. We stock a full range of induction heaters for everything from small motors to massive gearboxes.
